State Conference sets the party platform and is an important opportunity for policy issues to be raised and debated by ordinary party members. In 2024 State Conference will be held on the 27th/28th July.
Over the years LEAN has achieved significant wins at the NSW conference thanks to people like you building support in your local branches. This includes commitments to the Great Koala National Park, publicly owned renewables, a NSW Climate Change Act and many more. All commitments we are stoked to see legislated or under development by the Minns Government!
This year LEAN is advocating for progress on two key issues:
- Action on deforestation - land clearing and native forest logging
Australia is a global deforestation hotspot and NSW has been ranked the worst state for forest protection. The previous government weakened laws which have seen land clearing rates explode, to an astonishing rate of 382 football fields every day! We are also the only mainland state without a plan to transition from logging native forests to 100% plantation timber.
Electrification is a leading way to reduce household energy costs whilst also addressing climate change and supporting domestic manufacturing. It is a win-win-win policy outcome for Labor, and NSW should be leading the way!

Protecting NSW's Marine Environment
NSW enjoys a biodiverse marine environment, home to a globally unique mix of tropical and temperate species. Marine conservation went backwards under the former government. Our NSW Labor platform has longstanding commitments to restore sanctuary zone protections, and expanding the network of marine parks including a Sydney Marine Park. Unfortunately the current Government is yet to make any progress. Help us send a message to Premier Minns and Minister Moriarity that Labor members want to see us continue our great legacy of protecting the ocean environments.
Protecting the Liverpool Plains from CSG
The Liverpool Plains are some of the most fertile and productive farmlands in NSW. Yet it is under threat from destructive Coal Seam Gas (CSG) extraction. CSG can contaminate groundwater and aquifers. It is totally unsuitable for the Liverpool Plains and Upper Namoi Valley floodplain, which taps into some of the largest and most important aquifers in the Murray Darling Basin. This motion calls on the NSW Government to commit to ban any Coal Seam Gas extraction or exploration on the Liverpool Plains.
